Knowing the wind had increased and changed direction significantly, the pilot decided to make one flying beat having been ground handling. On becoming airborne the pilot found the air to be very turbulent so turned to make a top landing. Pilot lost control of glider and landed heavily.

Pilot discovered that glass fibre side slat had come out of position on harness and had interfered with speed bar line. This was not picked up during pre-flight check as line was still free moving. During subsequent flight the speed bar line cut half way through a load bearing strap. This was spotted on next pre-flight check.
