While the BOS hangies were shivering in Scotland over the May Bank Holiday weekend, the North-South Cup got in a fantastic weekend of flying.
On Friday May 3rd most competitors flew to the Brighton area from Rybury Hill in the Thames Valley, with Steve Senior maxing out at 122km. Others aimed north of London with less success. Saturday proved too windy, but on Sunday a 100km goal was set from Milk Hill.
12 pilots made it to Milton Keynes including Phil Colbert, Pat Dower, Jim Mallinson and Emile Van Wyk. As if these two days weren't quite enough, on Monday a 170km goal was set from Golden Ball near Marlborough. 13 pilots got home to set a new goal record, with a whole raft more flying over 100km. These best-ever days in UK paragliding are becoming an annual event!

On April 6th, his last day in office, outgoing IHPA Paragliding Competitions Officer Rafal Obora smashed the Irish XC record with a flight of nearly 78km.
His excuse for arriving late to the IHPA AGM was accepted! The previous record was held by Tom Cardas who flew 65km from Mount Leinster to beyond Ashford, County Wicklow in 2011.
Rafal and his flying buddy Mariusz Jachimowicz flew from Mount Leinster to land together just north of Rathangan, County Kildare. Lubor Kandera flew with them and landed close by at 73km. Since emigrating to Ireland from eastern Europe a few years ago Rafal, Mariusz and Lubor have made a huge impression on the Irish flying scene.

April saw several interesting XC flights made in the UK.
Tim King flew 212km from Milk Hill to Wisbech on his Atos VR on the 21st. The next day Andy Hollidge made 150km from Dunstable to Bungay in Suffolk, also on a VR. And on the 30th Adrian Thomas (Gin Boomerang 9) flew 233km from Leckhampton to Plymouth - just a few km short of Richard Carter's 2011 record - and Tim Pentreath (Advance Sigma 8) logged 115km from Ubley to Torquay.
There have been many other flights of note!
