Whilst on a powered cross country flight the brummels connecting the speed system on the left side vibrated loose. The pilot was able to prevent the line from contacting the prop and landed safely.

Pilot crashed on launch causing broken leg. Crash also caused prop to puncture fuel tank resulting in explosion and fire. Swift action of CFI with extinguishers prevented more serious injuries.
