BHPA Registered Schools will train you at a rate of progress that is suitable for you. They are monitored for safety, the quality of the training they offer and the equipment they use, and their trained instructors are licensed by the Association.
The number of different flying disciplines offered by BHPA schools can at first sight seem a little confusing, so it‘s important to understand the different types of training available before choosing a school. The Learn to Fly section of this web site explains the relative merits of each discipline, and the types of flying involved.
-
You can learn to launch a paraglider, from a hill, by being towed from the ground, or using a power unit attached to your harness (paramotoring).
-
You can learn to launch a hang gilder, from a hill, by being towed from the ground, by being towed by a powered aircraft (aerotow), or with a power unit attached to your harness (powered hang gliding).
-
Parascending pilots fly canopies that are towed into the air by a Land Rover or winch.
Overseas Training. The BHPA has no remit to regulate foreign schools. Prospective pilots considering overseas ab-initio training should confirm that the school is either a UK based BHPA Registered School conducting overseas training in accordance with BHPA requirements, or is a school operating under the auspices of the governing body of the country concerned. If the latter, check that an IPPI Card qualification is offered.
